Please join us for a participatory screening of Brokeback Mountain at Mass Gallery on June 17. Seattle-based artist Natalie Woodlock has been organizing a screening tour of Ang Lee’s film, handing out handkerchiefs at the beginning of the movie, and afterwards asking viewers to write down the scenes that make them cry. She embroiders the names of each person who sheds tears on their handkerchief, and illustrates the scenes that bring viewers to tears for her artists’ book Tearjerker.

Clay Club will be doing a pop-up event in the yard of MASS Gallery, on Saturday May 30! The Clay Club is located at Monofonus Studios, tucked into the neighborhood just across the street from MASS Gallery. Membership is made up of a wide range of ceramicists, from those who are just starting out to established clay artists, and the work produced in the club ranges from functional pieces to sculpture and everything in between. MASS is really excited to host this showcase & market. The event is being lovingly doula’d by former Clay Clubber and current MASS member, Grayson Hunt. MASS member Tanya Zal will be firing up The Earth Oven 🧱 Lynny’s will be open for business 🥞 and MASS will be offering a by-donation mimosa bar for guests🥂

An afternoon of making and material attention. This textile workshop invites visitors to gather around cloth, thread, and simple tools to weave, mend, embroider, and appliqué new and beloved pieces for their collections. In the spirit of the exhibition, the workshop honors slow accumulation and care—how objects carry memory through touch, repair, and quiet transformation.

Artists Caroline Perkison and Magdalena Jarkkowiec will offer brief demonstrations in weaving and embroidery/appliqué to help participants get started, followed by open working time. Visitors are welcome to bring garments, scraps, or textiles from home to mend or rework, or to begin something new using materials provided on site. The workshop creates a shared space for working with textiles while engaging the exhibition’s themes of material attention and lived-in objects.

Suggested materials to bring:

• Thread/yarn (for embroidery, sewing, and weaving)

• Fabric (can be something that needs to be mended or create a new piece)

• Embroidery hoops

• Needles

• Pins

• Cardboard (looms)

• Scissors

An evening at a shared table. Supper Club invites patrons to gather around the Earth Oven for a meal prepared and served in the spirit of hospitality and exchange. Picture it, wood-fired lahmajun (Armenian pizzas), a myriad of salads, drinks, handmade ceramic plates, and layers of patterned table cloths all under the twinkle lights and the stars above. In partnership with the exhibition LAMP at MASS Gallery, Supper Club extends the exhibition’s spirit of material care and collective presence into an outdoor meal, where food, handmade objects, and conversation come together in a temporary commons. Alongside her more sculptural practice, Gabrielle Constantine has shared in cooking dinners and hosting gatherings with communities in Philadelphia, Mexico City, Austin, and is consistently and continually innovating ways of gathering community through art and food.  Guests are invited to linger, share space, view the exhibition, and experience the simple intimacy of eating together.

An evening of shared attention. Close Encounters: Read In invites visitors to gather with books and settle into reading as a collective, contemplative act. Like the exhibition itself, the event honors accumulation and care: the comfort of holding a familiar object, the curiosity enlivened by a pre-loved book, the subtle energy of being alone together. Visitors are invited to move freely between the gallery, the adjoining yard, and the resident used bookstore—bringing a beloved book from home or discovering one on site. A curated vinyl DJ set, sourced from the DJ’s personal record collection, will shape the atmosphere for reading, rest, and renewed attention.

Join us at MASS Gallery on Sunday, July 27, 11-2pm for communal mosaic and tile making using recycled ceramics. Help us reimagine broken bisque and glaze ware into mosaic pieces for a communal sculpture project coming to the yard at MASS this Fall. Workshop led by Jamie Lerman, Grace Mendenhall, and Tanya Zal. All materials provided, but BYO-broken ceramic pieces welcome. No RSVP needed, and no cost to attend. Drop in and stay as long as you like!

Join us for the opening of Hard Served Soft with DJ Veneer and Lynny’s open late!

Hard feelings, ideas, thoughts and objects rendered soft. How do we use materials to soften feelings that want to be felt? How do we make fun of realities that taunt and haunt us? What do we make soft so it can hit hard? From woven tapestries of ocean garbage to quilted scenes of trans injustice, this group show brings together 10 artists who explore hard stuff in soft ways.

Featuring: Ben Aqua, Kendra Bergman, Beth Schindler, Michelle Devereux, Grayson Hunt, Jessica Gritton, Carly Ostler, Jasmine Amazing, Bella Maria Varela, and Ian Gerson

Everyone is cordially invited to Hotbox 2023 resident Jamie Lerman’s Close Encounter public programming: a Book Sharing from 6-8pm and Shabbat Potluck Dinner from 8-10pm.

The end of the week is a time to celebrate rest with togetherness. We welcome guests to pass and hold books, dishes, cups, food, and community on this wonderful Friday eve.

To participate in the event, we ask that you bring a favored dish and cup for yourself, and a dish of food. All meal sizes and styles are welcome. For the Book Sharing, we invite you to peruse a curated selection of artbooks and printed matter from the collections of @timebeingbooks. As an option in your participation, we’d love for you to bring your own book––that acts as a personal talisman in your home or creative space. Together our collection will be displayed for gentle review among the space.

Riso Roni is a Risograph Print Show, exhibiting work from Austin print shops, artists, and students. This year, the presenters are students from 3 Central Texas Universities. UT Austin' Riso Room, St. Ed's Riso Lab, and TX State's Studio Risograph programs will be tabling the events with prints and zines and calendars. Riso Riso and Animal Facts Club will also be tabling the event with new merchandise. Riso Roni is open Saturday Nov 19 from noon - 5 at MASS Gallery.
