MASS Hotbox Residency

Next application cycle: Summer 2020

The Hotbox Residency program seeks individual artists or artist-teams interested in participating in a self-directed residency in Austin, TX at the MASS Gallery space in Easy Austin. During the one-month summer residency, the gallery provides working studio space and a working stipend of $500 for two selected artists* to develop projects and programs for the Austin community.

While applicants may be at any stage of their career, MASS is particularly interested in nurturing projects that would not be realized otherwise. MASS’s goal is to give artists the opportunity to explore new ideas or practices, and allow the participating artists to engage with the Austin community through their Close Encounters public programming series. Close Encounters is a program designed to provide new methods of engaging the public’s curiosity. Open and broad, this prompt can be approached from a multitude of ways such as a performative event, a screening, or a radically executed thought experiment.

*Stipend and number of selected artists subject to change pending specific artist’s needs and MASS’s funding

Residents will have daily access to the 800 square foot gallery which is furnished with track lighting, air conditioning, a chair and work table, wireless internet, a ladder, and basic installation tools. Residents are welcomed to utilize MASS’s surrounding uncovered outdoor space for installations, performances, or production. MASS offers no production workshops of any kind but, if necessary, can assist in finding available options to satisfy specific project needs. A $500* honorarium will be awarded to each chosen artist or artist-team to assist in completing a successful residency.

Each resident will be financially responsible for transportation costs to and from Austin as well as for housing, living expenses, local transportation, production costs and any additional materials.

The Hotbox residency program is open to artists working in any medium and any stage in their career.
