In conjunction with Monochromatic Dreams, on Sunday February 2nd, from 1-5pm, MASS Close Encounters presents a Frida Friday ATX market and workshop with artist Yvette Mayorga.
From 1-5pm, MASS will host a Frida Friday ATX market - Austin’s first and only monthly Womyn of Color-centered mercado y más. Frida Friday ATX has worked with over 300 self-identified womyn of color since its inception, including musicians, artists, entrepreneurs and creatives. Each month they create a marketplace and cultural space that celebrates our diverse cultures while centering the valuable work of supporting Womyn of Color creatives and entrepreneurs.
From 3-5pm join artist Yvette Mayorga for the workshop Reclaiming Shoes Through Frosting. In this guided workshop, participants will pipe found shoes with plaster “frosting” using traditional baking tools. The shoes are in remembrance to those who traverse borders, both real and imagined. The found piped shoes will live in the gallery space during the duration of the exhibition as a representation of labor and shared space. The public will be invited to add to this ongoing collection during gallery hours as well.
Stay plugged into our website, Instagram feed or Facebook page for all the latest on upcoming events as they develop.
About Close Encounters
With each exhibition, MASS solicits participating artists to devise a program designed to provide new methods of engaging the public’s curiosity, inviting them to participate intellectually or physically with the exhibition space, as well as the artist’s work and concepts. Open and broad, this prompt can be approached in a multitude of ways: performance based, passive, or completely radical in execution or thought. Close Encounters is a challenge to the artist, as well as the audience, and is designed to provide a new way of encountering and understanding the creative process.
About Frida Friday ATX
Frida Friday ATX is a movement for gender and economic justice. We create markets and cultural spaces that help bridge the wage gap that Women of Color disproportionately experience, and center, amplify, and connected WoC artisans, local artists and those most economically marginalized. We grow WoC-led economies by offering economic opportunities & education. We believe our communities deserve to be seen and celebrated, so we create culturally rich, diverse spaces that celebrate LatinX and other WoC communities. Over the last two years, Frida Friday ATX has proudly brought Austin over forty market and events and contributed more than $200,000 to the local economy. Every month, we hire & collaborate with local DJ’s, photographers and artists to create and support locally driven events, and to ensure we contribute to the local economy.
