Open Call: Lost and Found

Lost and Found is a project organized by MASS in collaboration with artist Yvette Mayorga, who is in the early research and development phase of a major public art commission for the new terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, slated to open in 2030. Drawing from her ancestral ties to the Bracero Program—Mayorga reflects on the emotional resonance of personal objects carried across borders and generations. Extending this reflection outward, she invites fellow creatives to share their own stories of “lost and found,” while also considering migration within broader ecological contexts, including the interconnected flora and fauna of Texas and Mexico.

AIRPORT PROJECT BACKGROUND
A new Concourse at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is currently being designed and is anticipated to deliver more than 20 new passenger gates. Passengers will access the new Concours from the Barbara Jordan Terminal through a subterranean tunnel. A multi-level Interface will provide access to the new Concourse.  Collectively referred to as conveyances (elevators, surrounding walls, stairs and escalators) and lobbies, the Concourse Interface will have an integrated artwork that celebrates the ages and spirit of Austin while provoking the sentimentality of world travel. The artwork installation will explore the poetic possibilities of visual storytelling using heritage, whimsy and curiosity with innovation and progress. This Concourse Interface project is one of several opportunities for artists that will be realized over the next five years as a part of the Airport Expansion & Development Program (AEDP). All AIPP artists are contractually obligated to conduct Community Engagement. Lead Artist, Yvette Mayorga, is organizing this project with MASS Gallery as a part of her Community Engagement phase.
